Using presentations to showcase our learning

The  literacy group went to the zoo with year 1. Their follow up activity was to make presentations about an animal of their choosing.
Some children are more independent than others at presenting their work. e.g. Lyi Sorn.
Everything we have attempted in the group during the year is to provide a vehicle to encourage the children to think and to try to take some responsibility for their learning. I have used the two presentations that the children did mainly on their own. Leatham needed a little more help but was keen and tried to be independent.

Soup Making & editing

My inquiry is about giving the children the opportunity to learn to follow instructions when making/doing things.

We need to work on self corrections and editing.

We made soup to sell for our Trade and enterprise activity. As you can see the children participated well and enjoyed making and selling the soup. They still need lots of help with ideas and how to write down a story using correct punctuation and vocabulary even when it is something they have experienced themselves. The experience was worthwhile just as an experience but I would have liked to get even more from it. I still have to mark their work as they do it or have them send it to me to edit because I find that I can't access their work in their folders on the dashboard easily.

Four weeks ago we make soup with my group. I cut up the carrots and I put them in the pot. Soon it was cooking. It was nice and I cut up the pumpkin and I put it in the pot too. Next Vili got the leeks and cut them up for the soup. It smelt delicious and I wanted to eat some. When we finished cooking it, we let it cool and then we put it in the freezer.   Two weeks ago we sold the soup for 1$ a cup with a piece for  of a bread.  First the little people came and bought some soup. When the bell rang the other classes came and bought some soup.  Some people came and they got two cups of soup. We sold all the soup and it was fun.

This was edited before but we missed these.

Four weeks ago we made soup. My favourite vegetable is carrots. I scraped the carrots and then I scraped the parsnips and then I grated It. Then  I put it in the pot of soup and stirred it.  It smelt yummy and nice. Two weeks ago we sold soup to the school. We put the soup into four big pots. Some of the soup was chicken and some was beef. It smelled yummy. We sold chicken and beef soup and it was only 1$ for one cup and  two cups for 2$. Some kids and teachers came to buy some and then they said that it was good and yummy soup. When the soup was all gone we started to clean up and go to have our lunch.

 2. We wrote stories using the Three Little Pigs Story by changing the characters and some of the situations . An example of editing.

After that the first fox saw a dragon and he screamed and he went inside the house and he stopped screaming. The dragon said, “Open the door now or I will burn your house down.”
“No,” said the fox. The dragon burnt the house down and the fox ran to the second fox who heard the first fox calling to him. “There is are dragon. We were right and mum is not right we are.”
“ Hurry come into the house,” said his brother.

The Dragon come flying to the house. He said, “Little fox little fox let me in.” “No said the fox you are a big bad dragon.” I will burn your house down.” And he did.

The two foxes ran to their brother’s brick house.

Lots of work on punctuation.  Basics still not done without help.
Reading what they have written and recognising errors to fix needs
lots of practice.   Have started to do dictation to try to help them to think about
spelling an punctuation.

So far I have managed to go into the children in my group's folders but have found that for some reason not all the work they have done is either in the correct folder or not there at all.
When I go to open the work I want to look at I have to use the pop out button so that I can mark it or write a comment on it. It goes back into the folder and what I have put is not there unless I pop it out again.

Soup Making and activities to help the children edit their own work.

This year I have been putting the reading activities etc. on the children's devices and they are doing nearly all their work on them.
This is a big step for me because last year the children published their work and looked up information but did not use the net for much of their other activities.

My site has been created but is still not working properly. Hopefully Garth is going to help me with it in the near future.

My task for this term is to set up my site with Garth and to establish a link to the site so that the children can access their work more readily. So far I have learnt how to access the teacher dash board to see what is in the children's folders. The next step is to be able to make a comment and to help them edit their work in their folders.

So far the children can access their work when I send it to them from my drive. The work I get from the net or from the resource room I email it to myself and then share with them - View only. They make a copy and put it in their reading folder ready to put on a document page when it is time to use the work. Other activities are made on pages, or a document and shared with the children as described. My next challenge is being able to keep a better track of what tasks have or haven't been completed.

It's exciting after 50+ years of teaching to be embarking on an exploration of teacher practice and its correlation to student learning outcomes. In particular I am interested in developing a google site which will empower my literacy students with their visible learning. The days of pencil and paper are diminishing and the power of digital connections is changing the landscape.
